Our Santa Monica Mosaic livestream series returns September 27 with a two-part series, Final Approach: The Past and Future of Santa Monica Airport.

Part One: Where Legends Took Flight traces the historic airport's evolution from its Clover Field origins to the present day. We'll first look at moments that cemented Santa Monica's impact on global aviation, from the first successful flight around the world and the first Women's "Powder Puff" Air Derby to the development of the Douglas DC-3 that revolutionized commercial air travel. Our featured guests will then reflect on the airport's lasting impact on our local community: the growth of the onsite artist colony, the origins of the Ninety-Nines women pilots' organization, and the 1983 gathering of volunteer pilots who set out to fly families to the medical care they need, regardless of distance.

Host Libby Motika welcomes historian Nina Fresco, SMO Artist-in-Residence Gregg Chadwick, and Angel Flight West's Associate Executive Director Cheri Cimmarrusti for this soaring conversation on the airport's century-long legacy, complete with historic photos of pioneering pilots ready to take off.

The free livestream event airs September 27 at 5 pm.

Part Two: Charting the Course Ahead will air on November 15, with Santa Monicans exploring various perspectives for the future of the historic airport.
